Why Should You Teach Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace as a Trainer?
Mental health is becoming more and more topical as research is being carried out and as the media raise awareness. Addressing mental health issues and getting rid of the stigma surrounding it has, therefore, become vital.
Addressing mental health awareness is becoming more relevant for companies and organizations worldwide, as part of a move towards addressing equality and diversity issues. It also makes good business sense if it can save companies money by reducing their staff turnover and sick leave days.
As a trainer, you can add mental awareness training materials to your portfolio, to go with other topical issues around wellbeing and equality, such as unconscious bias and introduction to mindfulness.

Why Training Staff on Mental Health Awareness at Work Is Important
We all can suffer from mental ups and downs, as we deal with the challenges that life throws at us. We can all feel anxious or sad at times.
However, sometimes these feelings do not go away and this is when our mental health suffers. Also, some people suffer from long-term serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Just like we can have diseases that affect the body, we can also suffer from diseases that affect the mind. The problem with mental illness is that it is not always easy to see, it does not appear ‘tangible’ in the same way as a heart condition or a broken leg, for example, might.
As a result, people who do not suffer may not always understand, and also, unfortunately, mental health conditions are sometimes surrounded by stigma. So, the people who are affected may feel ashamed and not able to talk about their condition.
Mental health conditions are more common than we might think, with about one person in five estimated to suffer from a mental disorder at some point in their life.
For this reason, a large part of the working population will be affected and so it is vital that staff are able not only to look after your own mental health but also to spot when other people might be suffering.
Why It Is Good for Businesses to Foster Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace

Supporting staff’s mental health is key for the creation of a supportive and motivating work environment. Using mental awareness training materials to train staff on mental health issues can be very beneficial for the overall workplace atmosphere.
The aim of raising awareness of mental issues in the workplace is to make sure that everyone feels supported and included even as they go through a hard time in their lives.
Raising awareness of mental health at work and removing the stigma associated with it is beneficial for business reasons, as well as for ethical reasons.
Staff who have good mental health thrive and, as a result, will be more productive at work if their company are supportive. People who suffer from a mental condition can be productive and happy if they manage their condition successfully and the support they receive at work is key.
A company that does not support their staff’s mental health risks losing a lot of money from sick leave days and from staff turnover. For instance, it is estimated that about 300,000 people every year lose their job because of mental health issues. High staff turnover means losing valuable knowledge and having to retrain new employees.
Providing training, for employees at every level, on mental health awareness is a way to help create a more supportive work environment.
These mental awareness training materials are not meant to turn everyone into an expert on mental health. Trying to cure mental health conditions is the job of mental health professionals.
The mental awareness training materials we have designed aim to provide a brief introduction to the topic of mental health. This is to help participants become familiar with the subject and to lift the stigma surrounding it.
Just being able to understand the symptoms of mental health conditions and becoming more sympathetic towards those who suffer can be very helpful.
