The Body and Workplace Communication

The body is deeply connected to many aspects of workplace training and our success in business. Here’s why non-verbal communication and body language really do matter in the workplace.

Confidence – Our posture tells others a lot about our confidence or lack of it. Are we showing a closed posture, such as with crossed arms? Or do we project openness through friendly, open body language? How we project ourselves through our bodies can be important if we wish to be seen as a confident and friendly person in the workplace.

Communication – Many people in different cultures, especially Italians, for example, tend to use their hands to speak. Indeed, we actually communicate more with gestures and our bodies than we do through speaking, statistics tell us. Non-verbal communication includes these mannerisms and gestures.

Trust and Rapport – When we are able to look people in the eye and address people directly and with confidence, it is easier to build trust and develop rapport. Imagine someone who, when they talk to you, can never look you in the eye and who always looks away from you. In such a s situation, it is harder to build rapport.

Leadership and a Strong Presence – Good and positive body language also helps you, as a leader, to project an air of authority and confidence. Projecting a strong, confident manner, such as through posture and open body language, is common among good leaders.

Conflict Management and Resolution – The right body language can certainly be very important when trying to solve difficult situations and manage difficult people. Your demeanor needs to be non-threatening and friendly as a starting point.

Cultural Sensitivities – It is also important to factor in cultural sensitivities when considering body language and non-verbal communication. Looking someone directly in the eye can be a bad thing in some cultures, so it is important to respect and understand business etiquette from a cultural perspective.

Negotiation Skills – If trying to close a deal or sell someone a product or service, the way in which you present yourself can greatly impact the outcome, and here once again, the right body language plays a key role.
