As trainers and L&D professionals, we know that adults learn best when they feel involved. A fun corporate workshop is one where participants take part, exchange ideas, and see a clear link to their own work and overall employee engagement. By weaving in interaction, real examples, and a little creativity, we turn training from a lecture into an experience people remember.

Quick Summary: How to Make Corporate Training Fun
- Begin with an icebreaker early on to relax participants.
- Use group activities and real-world examples throughout.
- Use the right type of seating plan for the workshop to involve everyone.
- Use different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and don’t just present.
- Make sure to show enthusiasm and set clear learning goals.
✨ Fun workshops create better employee engagement, help learning retention, and attract better feedback ratings.

In a world where we are used to getting access to things instantly because of technology, this sense of impatience also extends to the classroom.
These days, more than ever, it is a battle to make workshops fun and engaging, to keep those attending workshops interested.

As a trainer, much of what we do is measured, such as through attendee feedback forms and marks, and, if you are a freelance trainer, getting great feedback scores from your participants might mean being invited to hold further workshops and training.
So what can you do to make training more fun and memorable for those attending?
How Can You Use Icebreakers to Start a Workshop Effectively?
An icebreaker helps participants relax, connect with the other participants, and feel engaged from the start. It sets the tone for collaboration and makes the learning space more open and enjoyable.
Popular icebreakers include the:
Using an icebreaker activity at the start of the training is a great way to set the tone for the whole workshop.
It’s a chance for people to make new friends, to chat with colleagues they’ve not talked to before, and to have a bit of fun at the start of the session.
Ever wondered how to make compliance training fun? Use activities.
ACTION: Make sure you include an icebreaker in your training design (we include icebreakers in most of our downloadable and customizable training materials kits).
Why Are Group Activities Essential in Corporate Training?
Group activities turn learning into an experience rather than just a lecture. They help participants learn from one another while also having the chance to practice.
In addition to using an icebreaker at the start of your training session, make sure to integrate standard corporate training activities into the training.
Make sure, in other words, to get participants to self-discover solutions as groups by using experiential learning tasks that encourage reflection and hands-on collaboration.
According to the Association for Talent Development (ATD), organizations that emphasize interactive and experiential learning report stronger employee engagement and higher knowledge retention across training programs.
Making workshops interactive is a very powerful way to bring the fun factor into the classroom.
Well-designed classroom activities will blend learning around the training topic with the opportunity for attendees to interact with others and to learn through experiencing different learning techniques (more on this below in point 6).

How Can You Encourage Participation in Training Sessions?
Encouraging discussion and feedback keeps learners actively engaged. It gives quieter participants space to contribute and deepens understanding through reflection.
In the downloadable training programs we sell here on Symonds Training, we include (and suggest you do) activities that include time for a group discussion and feedback at the end of each activity.
Group feedback and discussion can be a great platform for those who will get more out of the training by being more involved and engaged in the content.

If group discussion is based on specific activities that act to drive home a key message involved with the training, then the discussions should always be on topic.
ACTION: Make sure (as we do) that the activities are supplemented with a discussion at the end of that activity.
What Room Setup Improves Learning Engagement?
The physical environment influences how participants experience the training. A well-planned room layout helps communication, movement, and learner comfort.
I cannot reiterate enough that it is worth paying attention to the conditions and environment that you use for the training if you want to make training fun. You can read our previous posts on:
- What Is the Most Effective Classroom Seating Plan
- Best Training Room Setup & Layout to Improve Learning
- Solutions to common training day problems
ACTION: Consider visiting the venue once or twice to double-check things such as key access and seating plans, and if the I.T. equipment works.
If you want to make training fun, make sure that the conditions are right from the start of the training, i.e., with the right layout, seating, and that you pre-empt issues that could otherwise have easily been avoided.
How Do Different Learning Styles Affect Training Design?
Trainers who adapt their approach to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners keep sessions dynamic and inclusive. This variety prevents fatigue and improves participant focus.
Based on adult learning theory and models such as Andragogy and Kolb’s experiential learning cycle, incorporating experience-based activities supports deeper learning and knowledge retention.
Having a basic understanding of how people learn can be extremely useful if you want to make training fun.
Some people learn best by listening; others by kinesthetic learning (touch), visually, or by reading, writing, and repetition. We all learn differently and often with a mix of the different styles above.

So make sure you avoid being that teacher who stands up in front of the class talking for the duration of the training! Diversify.
How? You can make sure that you do what we do with our customizable and instantly downloadable training programs, by making sure that the training plans include:
- Vocal teaching time
- Activities (that include group work)
- Visuals such as PowerPoint slides
ACTION: Just make sure that, if you are creating your own training materials, you include a variety of teaching methods. Include the things already mentioned, such as activities, a nicely designed PowerPoint presentation, a student handbook, and so on.
Why Do Professional Training Materials Matter?
High-quality training materials bring structure and professionalism to your delivery. They also save preparation time and make workshops more engaging and consistent.
Whilst it might be possible to improvise and teach by making the lesson up as you go along, nothing beats well-researched and well-designed training.
Make sure to include the aforementioned things, such as a classy-designed PowerPoint presentation, and activities that make the training fun but that also relate closely to the course you are running.
I also suggest creating and providing a course certificate and including a student’s workbook for the student to make notes and to refer to after the course.
ACTION: Either take the time needed to prepare a training package so that you have a solid package that includes certificates, sign-in sheets, and so on.
Or, if needed, save yourself dozens of hours in research and preparation and just instantly download one of our packages.

How to Use Real-Life Examples in Training
Relatable examples make learning memorable. They help learners connect theory to their own experiences and see the real value in applying new skills.
Make sure you know your audience! By knowing your audience, half the battle is won.
Consider what type of people are attending the workshop (in terms of their interests and line of work) and try and have in mind examples related to the training that match your audience profile.

There are, though, certain subject areas that most of us can relate to. We all like to eat food, right? Most of us like to travel for holiday purposes. Such topics (provided they relate to the training) can also be used.
ACTION: Take just 5 minutes to consider who you are training and think about how you might tailor the training to this audience.
How Can Trainer Enthusiasm Make Learning Fun?
A trainer’s energy sets the emotional tone of a workshop. Genuine enthusiasm encourages curiosity, laughter, and a sense of shared enjoyment.
Trainer enthusiasm and strong facilitation skills help manage group dynamics, keep sessions inclusive, and sustain positive energy throughout the learning experience.
For more practical ways to maintain attention throughout a session, see our guide to keeping adult learners engaged in training.
Be professional but have fun, and your participants will have fun. Also understand, when giving training, the difference between fun and funny is!
You want to be a fun facilitator, but do not try to be funny. In other words, you want participants to have an enjoyable experience, and if there are some laughs, perfect.
Do not think that you need to attempt to be funny. I mention this as I often see an over-focus on trying to be funny, and the teacher loses the participants.
Just focus on being natural, try to show genuine enthusiasm for what you are teaching (or learn to fake it if you have to!), and focus on enjoyable training.

That is, as we have mentioned several times, training that uses various teaching methods.
ACTION: Focus on learning being fun and do not worry too much about trying to be funny.
Also, try to make sure you are enthusiastic about what you are teaching. As a trainer, consider teaching things that you yourself genuinely have an interest in.
Why Should Trainers Define Objectives Early?
Clear objectives guide both trainer and participants. They keep sessions focused, reduce confusion, and help learners see their progress.
Some trainers, when designing their own training, make the mistake of forgetting to make the lesson objectives clear from the start.
You do not want participants secretly wondering what on earth this or that activity has to do with the course.
Explain the objectives at the very beginning of the day, and also refer back to them if you feel it will help.
ACTION: Make sure you have 4 or 5 main objectives listed on your PowerPoint presentation at the start of the course.
Understand How People Learn
Every group of learners includes people who prefer different ways of taking in information. By understanding these learning styles, trainers can make sessions more inclusive and engaging.
Common Learning Styles in Corporate Training
| Learning Style | Description | Trainer Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Visual | Learners understand best through seeing images, charts, and demonstrations. | Use slides, diagrams, and colour-coded notes. |
| Auditory | Learners retain information by listening and discussing ideas. | Include storytelling, discussions, and recorded examples. |
| Kinesthetic | Hands-on learners prefer to move and practice as they learn. | Add role-plays, case studies, and interactive activities. |
Definition – Experiential Learning: A learning approach where participants gain knowledge through direct experience, reflection, and application. It encourages adults to connect new concepts to their own workplace situations.
How Can Trainers Use Gamification Techniques?
Gamification means using simple game elements in training, such as giving learners points, badges, or access to new challenges, to make learning more fun and engaging.
Adding gamification elements to your workshops can spark motivation and healthy competition.
You might award points for participation, use team quizzes, or set mini-challenges that connect to the course objectives.
When done with care, these small incentives create energy in the room and help participants focus on applying what they learn.
Fun Ideas for Hybrid or Remote Training
Hybrid and remote sessions can be just as interactive as classroom training when designed for connection rather than broadcast.
Get online participants to join breakout-room discussions, share whiteboards, and take part in quick polls and visual icebreakers.
Also, rotate speaking roles so everyone has a voice to make the training inclusive.
For blended delivery, pair on-site groups with virtual partners for brief tasks because it keeps both audiences active and builds a shared learning community across spaces.
How to Use Humor Appropriately in Training
Humor, used respectfully, helps people relax and remember key ideas, but it should never distract from the learning goal.
Light touches of humor, such as with an anecdote or a playful activity name, can ease tension and make complex topics more approachable.
The key is authenticity: laugh with participants, not at anyone, and keep jokes inclusive.
When humor supports the message rather than replacing it, it becomes a subtle yet powerful engagement tool.
