Outline and Objectives

The aim of these training course materials is to to help participants develop intergenerational inclusion at work; understand the benefits of generational diversity in the workplace and manage, motivate and engage different generations in the workplace.

Note about the Theories Used for This Course and if They Can Be Applied to Different Cultures and Countries

The content of these managing different generations in the workplace training course materials is based on Strauss and Howe’s generational theory as published in their book Generations from 1991 (later updated in 1997 with The Fourth Turning) and on further research projects that were done later on.

Strauss and Howe’s theory was developed in the USA and the other research sources we drew from also come from ‘Western’ societies.

As such, the majority of the content in this training package applies, generally speaking (with some differences), to most of North America, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Countries in the rest of the world have developed different generational classifications, based around historical events that concern their countries. So, if you are teaching in Asia, Africa or South America, you will need to adapt these materials and supplement them with different research sources, particularly as far as the older generations are concerned.

With regards to younger generations, the Thai researcher Siriyupa Roongrernsuke has pointed out that there is a convergence of attitudes globally among people who were born after the 1980s, which previous generations do not share. So, as you cover the attitudes of the youngest generations, there will be more similarities between different cultures globally.

At the end of the course, your participants should be able to:

This course is designed for a trainer to deliver it to a group of people in a classroom.
