Course Outline and Objectives
This course will teach the basics of how to best aid ambulant and disabled users in such a way to ensure best practice and etiquette is used.
The aim is to help participants become aware of accessibility issues for public spaces and enable them to carry out accessibility audits to make their premises compliant to the law and accessible to all.
Note Regarding Balance Between Accessibility and Fire and Life Safety
- There is a balance between accessibility and fire/life safety that has to be achieved. In these training materials, we focus on introducing the accessibility aspect.
- Any accessibility changes should not compromise fire and life safety. Fire service and/or fire safety standards providers should be consulted to ensure that locations are safe and meet all fire and life safety requirements.
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
✔ Understand their legal (and moral) obligations for making their location accessible.
✔ Define disability and accessibility, including in relation to DDA, ADA and the Equality Act 2010.
✔ Make use of ideas from ‘Inclusive Design’ to make their premises accessible to all.

This is delivered as a classroom tutor-led one day workshop that includes a number of activities to get participants involved in the training and to make the course interesting for participants.
