This course will teach the basics of how to best aid ambulant and disabled users in such a way to ensure best practice and etiquette is used.

The aim is to help participants become aware of accessibility issues for public spaces and enable them to carry out accessibility audits to make their premises compliant to the law and accessible to all.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

✔  Understand their legal (and moral) obligations for making their location accessible.

✔  Define disability and accessibility, including in relation to DDA, ADA and the Equality Act 2010.

✔  Make use of ideas from ‘Inclusive Design’ to make their premises accessible to all.

✔  Identify ways to help people find their way more easily in their location.

✔  Understand what reasonable adjustments are and how to implement them (‘adjustments’ are known as ‘accommodations’ or ‘modifications in the USA).

✔  Apply strategies to undertake an accessibility audit.

Course Delivery Method

This is delivered as a classroom tutor-led one day workshop that includes a number of activities to get participants involved in the training and to make the course interesting for participants.

In addition, it is possible to adapt these materials for teaching through digital online teaching platforms. The PowerPoint slides can be used for teaching online and, as part of the training materials, we provide some guidance with suggestions on how you can adapt the activities for an online session.
